New FIS specifiers guide for SFS

In early 2020 PROTEKTOR were invited to join a FIS working group to produce “The Specifiers’ Guide to SFS External Wall Systems”.

Our SFS & Business Development Manager Mr Daryl Lewis working alongside manufacturers and installers of SFS external wall systems joined a specialist group within the Industry.

With the FIS at the helm they commenced a journey to provide a guide for SFS that would help and assist architects, engineers, designers and installers through the stages in designing, selecting and specifying steel framed systems to form the external envelope for steel and concrete framed buildings. This guide was published in July 2021.

There is still a great deal of work being done and Protektor are committed to supporting the FIS in their Quest to produce an industry advice for the future.

FIS awards industries best!

The long-awaited ceremony celebrated the fantastic projects completed by FIS members in nine categories.

Independent FIS Award Judges, Tony Pieri and Clive Perry said: “The quality of all the entries we have seen has been excellent, making our task of selecting overall winners in the various categories very difficult. The differences in quality are minimal – decimal points separate those who have and have not won an award. The architect or interior designer of a gold-winning project also receives an award.

The FIS Contractors Awards ceremony paid tribute to design and craftsmanship and at this year’s award ceremony where this year PROTEKTOR sponsored the “Partitioning Gold & Silver Award”.

The winners of this year’s Gold and Silver Partitioning award were i-Wall and Bespoke Construction Services respectively.

The event proved to be a great success and we truly look forward to supporting the FIS in future events.

Sustainability and MAXI-TEC

With the continued emphasis on the use of sustainable materials in all aspects of Construction, and the need to offset the carbon footprint throughout the life of projects, responsible Contractors are looking to their supply chain to support their own aims in achieving this.

Many main contractors realise that the benefits of the use of such products are recognised by not only those interested in a 'green' alternative, but by clients, local authorities and government legislators, all which are eager to champion new both developments, and to partner with Companies who are bringing the use of such products and services to the market.

From the first steps of breaking ground, to the final handover and beyond, the guidelines and costs of projects, not only in monetary terms, are being increasingly assessed to ensure a level of responsibility in the design, supply, construction and operating costs, with the use of sustainable and low Carbon materials being seen as a key factor in the consideration during the awarding of tenders and inclusion in key supply chain agreements.

Organisations such as BREEAM and the increasing appointment of 'Sustainability Consultants' on many major projects, already points towards the level of importance placed upon this aspect of any major project

As with any changes in what is seen as a 'traditional' industry, construction can be sometimes sluggish to react, with new developments being slow to assimilate into general use, particularly if the use of such products necessitates additional equipment or training proving costly and, with the current restrictions bought about by the spread of the Covid-19 virus, not practical or safe.

With the development of a lightweight steel profile, recognisable in both its application and its fitting, as well as bringing with it the opportunity to help support the twin goals of sustainability and reduction of CO2, PROTEKTOR UK's new Maxi-Tec profile offers a sustainable alternative to a traditional solution, with a profile fitted in exactly the same way as the products it replaces, while giving real benefits in it use to interior fitters and subsequent utility fix contractors due to its unique design.

PROTEKTOR UK, based in Kidderminster, are well known as a manufacturer of lightweight steel profiles for interior walls and partitions, and in 2019, we began manufacture and supply of our 'Maxi-Tec' profile which is unique in that it offers a sustainable solution for what has been a very traditional product. In its manufacture, for every 100 tonnes of metal produced, there is a saving of 36 tonnes of CO2, over standard stud profile. Following a full lifecycle assessment, the profile has been awarded product specific EPD and BRE Certificate.

Maxi-Tec has already been specified on a number of projects, and was recognised in its first year of UK manufacture by its inclusion as a finalist in the ‘Product Innovation of the Year’ at the Londonbuld Expo in November 2019.

Environmental benefits include:

Sustainability:

  • EPD Certified (Product Specific) BRE Accredited (Product Specific).
  • Recognised by BREEAM Global and projects are awarded 1.5 MAT-2 points for its inclusion in projects requiring a ‘Responsible Sourcing’ rating
  • 100% Recyclable.

Benefits to the Contractor:

  • NO ADDITIONAL COST IMPLICATIONS OR ADDITIONAL TRAINING OR EQUIPMENT REQUIRED IN ITS USE! - A straightforward like-for-like alternative, fitted in exactly the same manner as traditional Stud profiles.
  • 12 -15% lighter than traditional stud profile, Pre-Formed ‘push out’ sections to allow M&E to feed utilities through without drilling – whilst maintaining strength Lengths pre-cut to size, reducing fitting time (cutting on site), material waste and site removal costs.

We would be happy to discuss any requirements you have where the use of Maxi-Tec helps in achieve your Company’s environmental goals, and PROTEKTOR UK are already working closly with a number of main contractors and architects to a product which offers advantages in its 'green' credentials as well as cost saving in use, with no change in its fitting.

Maggie’s Centre Oldham

Architect: dRMM
Main Contractor: F Parkinson

A simple yet sophisticated wooden box of surprises. Supported on slender columns, the building floats above a garden framed by pine, birch and tulip poplar trees. From a central oasis, a tree grows up through the building, bringing nature inside. On entering, the visitor is met with a space, light and unexpected views down to the garden below, up to the sky, and out to the Pennine horizon.

The use of wood at Maggie’s Oldham is part of a bigger design intention to reverse the norms of hospital architecture. The timber faced soffit was supported with Protektor C3 Coated suspension grid. The PD300 was specified to ensure a high level of corrosion resistance whilst installed externally catering for the required wind load.

C3 Corrosion on Steel Profiles for Wall and Ceiling Suspension – is resistance futile?

PROTEKTOR – Coated products and fixings giving C5 Corrosion Protection.

With current heightened awareness of materials and fixings being not only compliant to current regulations, but also ‘future proof’, Architects, Contractors and clients are re-evaluating what is accepted as giving ‘sufficient’ protection, particularly in environments which attack metals and coatings.

Traditional galvanised finishes on stud and track give some degree of protection, but offer limited protection against corrosion from exposure to salt water, reactive acids, and various forms of alkalis and their compounds. The high conductivity of chloride-based environments also increases the risk of corrosion by converting the coated zinc to water-soluble zinc chloride.

PROTEKTOR manufacture and supply these products with a C3 and a C5 rated anti-corrosion coating, ideal for areas where the atmosphere either has the inclusion of chemicals ensuring hygiene and limiting bacterial growth (eg swimming pools, wet rooms, Spa’s), or a high alkaline content or where the grid is exposed to the elements when used in an external soffit construction.
